carcinomas, all of which are available in a liquid nitrogen tumor bank, are included. Although androgen inhibits estrogen tumorigenesis in the Syrian hamster kidney, it can be substituted successfully for estrogen in maintaining growth of early transplant serial passages. In such transplants hormone dependency is usually lost between the 12th and 20th serial passages (autonomy). These autonomous derivatives of hor mone-dependent renal tumors retain responsiveness to some steroidal hormones to varying extents. None of them has been as completely autonomous, i.e., hormone unresponsive, as the renal carcinoma of "spontaneous" origin. Although removal of

Spontaneous differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of cheek pouch in a Syrian hamster

A 2-year-old male hamster was presented because of left facial swelling and salivation. Necropsy wasperformed and affected cheek pouch with tissue samples of regional and internal organs were submitted forhistopathological study. In histopathological examination it was found that the tumor consisted of cords andislands of tumoric epithelial cells which were diffused in the dermis. Vacoulation o...

Cytochrome P-450 Activity at the Site of Renal Carcinogenesis Localization of Estrogen-induced DNA Adducts and Updated Version

Renal carcinoma in male Syrian hamsters, induced by chronic admin istration of estradici for 5-7 months, is known to arise in the cortex at the cortico-medullary junction. In this in vivo model for hormonal carcinogenesis, estrogen-induced covalent DNA adducts have previously been observed in whole kidney and have been postulated to be involved in tumor induction. In the present study, the intr...

Localization of estrogen-induced DNA adducts and cytochrome P-450 activity at the site of renal carcinogenesis in the hamster kidney.

Renal carcinoma in male Syrian hamsters, induced by chronic administration of estradiol for 5-7 months, is known to arise in the cortex at the cortico-medullary junction. In this in vivo model for hormonal carcinogenesis, estrogen-induced covalent DNA adducts have previously been observed in whole kidney and have been postulated to be involved in tumor induction. In the present study, the intra...

Localization of estrogen receptors in interstitial cells of hamster kidney and in estradiol-induced renal tumors as evidence of the mesenchymal origin of this neoplasm.

The mechanism of estrogen-induced and -dependent kidney carcinogenesis in Syrian hamsters and the cell of origin of the tumor are not well understood; they have been investigated in this study by mapping the cellular locations of estrogen receptor (ER) in estrogen-dependent tumors, in kidney tissue of hamsters treated with estradiol for 0.5 and 5.5 months, and in kidneys of age-matched controls...

Relative carcinogenic activity of various synthetic and natural estrogens in the Syrian hamster kidney.

Both synthetic and natural estrogens have been studied for their ability to induce renal carcinomas in castrated male hamsters after 9.0 months of treatment. Tumor foci were detected in frozen serial sections stained histochemically for estrase activity. Both diethylstilbestrol (DES) and 17 beta-estradiol had equal ability (100%) to induce renal tumors [approximately 20.5 +/- 3 (S.E.) tumor foc...
